Purple spiral

Extract: On the floor beside the boy was a purple spiral with curls like an opalescent snail’s shell. Deep purple curves merged with indigo leading to a centre touched by mauve. The patterns quivered and rippled before her eyes. Something stirred and uncoiled.

Yellow weed

An art teacher once told me that you don’t really see something till you draw it. I thought it was a fatuous comment at the time, mainly because I didn’t like him, but it happens to be true. Looking and seeing are very different things. Drawing challenges your preconceptions about what is beautiful and helps you to see something in all its complexity

This is not a Rose

Posted in Notes on December 25th, 2005

I used the line ‘This is not a rose’ as a sort of sly reference to Magritte’s ‘This is not a pipe.’ Ceci n’est pas une pipe if you speak french – which I don’t. I’m interested in how an artwork becomes something apart or separate from its subject matter. Some of the images that I post will be my own work and some will be the result of collaboration with another artist. Feedback would be welcome. Income would be even more welcome, but novel and strange at this stage.
